Bike Fitting

A bike fitting session in progress at Symmetrics Health

Ride further, more comfortably, with fewer injuries

A bike fit matches the bike to the rider instead of the other way around. Small changes to saddle height, reach, and cleat position can take pressure off your knees, hands, neck, and lower back, and let you put more power down for the same effort.

Fits are done by Robert Wickstrom, a registered physiotherapist and a keen cyclist himself, so you get someone who understands both how your body moves and what it is like to be out on the road for hours. We fit road, gravel, mountain, triathlon, and commuter bikes.

A fit here is billed as a physiotherapy visit, so most extended health plans cover it. It runs like a physiotherapy assessment rather than a shop tune-up, starting with your history and testing your mobility and strength off the bike, and the position is built around what we find.

Bike fits are booked by phone or email rather than online, so we can set aside the right amount of time for you.

Who a Bike Fit Helps

  • You get knee, hip, lower back, neck, or hand pain that shows up on the bike and settles when you get off it.
  • You have just bought a new bike, or changed something on your current one.
  • You are building toward a longer event and your current position will not hold up for the distance.
  • You have numbness or hot spots in your hands or feet on longer rides.
  • You are coming back from an injury and need the bike set up around what you can currently do.
  • You are simply not comfortable and have never had the bike properly set up for you.

How a Bike Fit Works

  1. Medical history and list of complaints

We start off the bike, going through your history and what is actually bothering you when you ride.

  2. Off the bike assessment

Mobility, range of motion, and observation, so the fit is built around how your body moves.

  3. Video analysis

We film you riding, using a phone, and go through the footage with you.

  4. Adjustments as needed

Cleats, saddle, and anything else on the bike that needs to change.

  5. Recheck video analysis

We film again so you can see what the adjustments actually changed.

  6. Education, exercise, and mobility work

Whatever you need to hold the new position and keep riding comfortably.

  7. Recommendations on parts

Stem or saddle changes if needed. We keep a few test saddles at the clinic to guide the recommendation.

What to Bring

  • Your bike, clean and in working order.
  • The shoes, pedals, and cleats you ride in.
  • Your usual riding kit, including shorts and any orthotics you use.
  • Any accessories that change your position, such as aero bars, a saddle bag, or bottle cages.
  • A water bottle. You will be on the bike for a while.

Fits take roughly two hours. If you want more than one bike fitted, let us know when you book so we can set aside the extra time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bike fit take?

Plan for about two hours. Additional bikes in the same appointment add roughly an hour each.

What is the difference between a full fit and a recreational fit?

A full fit is the complete assessment and adjustment process, suited to riders training or racing, riding long distances, or working around an injury. A recreational fit is for flat pedal bikes, a shorter session that gets you a comfortable, safe position on a bike you ride for fun or to commute. Cleat and shoe work is the main thing it leaves out, since flat pedals have no cleats to set.

Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?

No. Plenty of people book a fit precisely because riding has never felt comfortable.

Is a bike fit covered by insurance?

Most plans cover it. The fit includes a full off-bike assessment and strength testing, so it is billed as a physiotherapy visit. Coverage amounts vary, so check with your provider if you are unsure, and let us know at booking so we can give you the right receipt.

Can I bring a bike I have not bought yet?

Yes. A pre-purchase session can tell you what size and geometry will suit you before you spend the money, which is often cheaper than fitting the wrong bike afterwards.

If you are not sure which fit you need, or you want to bring more than one bike, call or email and we will sort it out with you.
